Lesson Description: The students will put on a gallery type show at their school. They will learn the process, participate as artists and organizers and attend the show.

Subject Area: Art and Business

Standards Addressed: N.H. Curriculum Framework for the Arts Achievement Standard Grades 5 - 8 A. Identify a variety of professions in the visual arts. *The intent of providing a focus on careers is not that all students will become artists and performers, rather it is that students will come away with an awareness of the many options available to them if they choose a career in the arts. (P.4)

Resources Needed: Artists who have an affiliation with the gallery who can provide enough art to fill the 'gallery (Grade 6 and monoprints) Framing capabilities (paper mats)

Artist statements prepared by gallery owner for P.R. and available at show (Students will prepare their own by looking at examples)

Refreshments provided by gallery (P.T.O.)

Preparation for Teacher (steps/tune): 1. State intention of lesson: to describe the

process of planning a gallery type show by experiencing the process. Comparing the process to a museum type show (see externship: Presenting a Museum Type Show 9/98) as part of the the evaluation. Cover vocabulary with students.

2. Present a lesson on monoprint production (this medium was selected because monoprints can be created in a timely fashion although any medium would be acceptable.)

3. Describe the process in it's entirety of how a gallery prepares a show. A. Artist Selection Artists are selected to be featured from the pool of artists already being represented by the gallery. An artist would more likely be chosen if his or her work was in demand and he or she was productive. (Grade 6)

B. Artwork Artist/s must supply the gallery with a pro-determined amount of art to fill the show. (Three monoprints minimum)

C. Date of Show Date for show is to be agreed upon.

D. Advertising Show is advertised by contacting local newspapers with pre- show materials (artist/s interviews). News reporters are invited to attend.

E. Invitations Invitations will be sent from the gallery's mailing list. (A list will be generated by art teacher and students. The list will include: The Art Place, School to Career Administrator - Betsy Bungeroth, other school administrators, parents and notice will be placed in the school newsletter)

F. Framing Gallery frames the art and figures the cost into the price of the art. (Students will mat their work and properly sign for show)

G. Hanging and pricing Gallery will hang show and place notification of prices on art. (Students will hang show and agree upon price for their prints)

H. Refreshments Refreshments will be provided for guests. 1. Profits Gallery will agree in writing about a commission on sales - example: 40/60. (Profits at school show will go toward art materials selected by the sixth grade for their use)

Student Directions:

A. Create a minimum of 3 monoprints. Sign correctly, no smudges or fingerprints. Mat the art;

B. Participate in a discussion of gallery procedures (see above).

C. View artist statements (Charlene Lehto, Peter Ferber and Madeline Albee) Write personal statement about monoprint scrios.

D. Select price for art and select a person to facilitate sales.

E. Assist in generating mailing list.

F . Assist in hanging show.

G. Attend show and visit with guests.

Student Assessment;

Students will be assessed on the quality of their monoprints based on the evaluation criteria in the art curriculum. They will be evaluated on the use of art teminology in their artist statement and how well they expressed their concept. They will be evaluated on their participation in all aspects of the process including the follow up discussion.

Vocabulary:

Conmission- art that is requested of an artist by a patron or gallery or organization.

Consignment - art that is sold by a gallery with the understanding that the gallery will receive part of the profit.

Gallery - a business that sells art or craft.

For profit - a business that takes a profit after paying its bills and employees.

Not for profit - a business that pays bills and employees but takes no profit.

Limited addtion print - a print made that has a specific number assigned to it. These are how prints are numbered and also how prints made of original works are numbered.

Giclee print - a French term meaning spraying of ink. Another term for Iris prints - a sophisticated reproduction process used to make prints of a fine art piece.
