Externship Lesson Plan - Gail Costello
Multiage 3/4 K.A. Brett School Tamworth, N.H. 03886 323-7271
Medical Community (Memorial Hospital)
Subject Matter: Social Studies/ Science

Key Questions to be explored:

1. What types of jobs are within the hospital community?

2. What skills (educational levels ) are needed for specific jobs?

3. What do the following words mean Physical Therapy, Cardiopulmonary, Nutritionist, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Radiology, Nursing, ICF ( intermediate care facility)

4. What is the difference between an Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist?

Outcomes:

1. The children will be able to identity (when given a list of jobs) which department the job is under. The departments are the words that are in bold in question 3.

2. The children will be able to compare the medical ways of Dr. Remick's and those that occur now.

3. The children will understand that there are more than just doctors and nurses in the medical community.

Activities:

1. Groups of children (4) will choose one bold word and brainstorm in a group what they think it is before being given information on it.

2. The children will research that particular department and share their learning (in a group of 4) with the rest of the class.

3. The small group will set up their particular job(s) of that department to the best of their ability. they should know when a patient may need their services.

4. The whole class will take a field trip to the hospital in October after studying the above so that they may observe some of the departments at work (radiology, cat scan, x-rays) (ICF-the children will sing a song to the clients) (physical therapy)

How will this lesson be reviewed and evaluated?

The children will be observed informally as they work in groups and they will be assessed on their understanding of the various jobs they explore.

They will be evaluated on the types of questions they prepare for their hospital visit.

They will be evaluated on how well they demonstrate their understanding of the medical community of Dr. Remick's time compared to the modern medical community of the Memorial Hospital through compare and contrast charts that each small group will create.

Other Comments:

There will be 3 multiage classes visiting the hospital on 3 separate days during the morning hours. These days will be Oct. 15th, 22nd, 29th. There are approximately 23 children in each class and there should be 3-4 chaperones.

I propose to separate the class into 3 groups.
a) fitness trail
b) hospita] tour
c) special department tours (radiology, cardiopulmonary, physical therapy)

Therefore there would be 7-8 children in each group. The whole class would gather together at the end of the morning and go to the Merriman house to sing to them.

I am coordinating this with Susie Lee at the hospital.

Hopefully all the preparation in learning the various jobs will be highlighted when the children see some of the activities they have studied in real life. The prior learning should make the trip more meaningful.
