Key Questions To Be Explored:

1. What math and science skills are used in the following departments at Memorial Hospital: Physical Therapy, Cardiopulmonary, Nutritionist, Radiology, Nursing, ICF, and Pharmacy?

2. How do the above departments of a hospital work together for a common good - patient health?

3. What aptitudes are necessary to pursue a career in any of the above fields?

4. What are some of the newer medical technologies being used at Memorial to diagnose and treat medical disorders?


Outcomes:

1. The children will be able to list two skills that are necessary for each of the assigned departments at Memorial Hospital.

2. The students will be able to describe how three departments at Memorial works closely together for the common good of the patient.

3. The students will be able to decide if they have any of the aptitudes required to work in the medical field.

4. The student will be able to describe in detail at least two new state of the art technologies that are employed at Memorial for either diagnosis or treatment of disease.


Activities:

1. Children will brainstorm skills they think are necessary for various department.

2. Children will interview someone in each department. From this they will learn aptitude, skills, and new technology that may be employed. (Groups of 4 departments.) Then, with chart paper, children gather to share, compare, and contrast each of the medical departments.

3. Children in groups of 4, following research and interviews will chart and/or graph how 3 departments are working together.

4. Class trip to the hospital in September/or October - Students will observe the various departments.


How will this lesson be reviewed and evaluated?

Students will be evaluated in an informal manner regarding their questions from the interview and research.

Students will do a one page paper explaining two new technologies employed at the hospital.


Other Outcomes:

On September 25 I plan on taking eight grade 4, 5, or 6 students to the hospital for about 1 1/2 hours. One group of eight will be in the morning session and the other group will be in the afternoon.

Proposal:

I am presently working this arrangement at Pine Tree. I have already had contact with Bev Holmes.

Follow-up would follow with oral presentations from the students and questions and answer session from student.
