Mountain Valley Physical Therapy
SUBJECT MATTER: Physical Education
KEY QUESTIONS TO BE EXPLORED:
1. What is a physical therapist?
2. Why would you go to see a physical therapist?
3. How can you become a physical therapist (educational level and certification)?
4. What do the following words mean THERAPY, MASSAGE (ICE AND HEAT), STRETCHING MUSCLE GROUPS, ULTRASOUND, SURGERY, PREVENTION OF INJURIES
OUTCOMES:
1. The student will understand the role of the physical therapist.
2. The student will understand why one would go to see a physical therapist.
3. The student will be able to identify common muscle groups that should be stretched before physical activity to help prevent injuries.
4. The student will be able to understand the difference between ice and heat massage therapy when they have an injury.
ACTIVITIES:
l. In a sit down discussion, the students will be asked if they have ever been to
to a physical therapist. If yes, discussion about the visit will follow.
2. Students will get in groups of three or four and come up with three or four stretches that can be used in class. They need to define the muscle groups used in the stretches. These will be shared and demonstrated to the class.
3. The teacher will review any stretches not discussed to help prevent injury. the teacher will also review when to use ice and heat therapy and ultrasound.
HOW WILL THIS LESSON BE REVIEWED AND EVALUATED?
Students will be evaluated and observed at the beginning of each class when stretching
out. Students will be continually reminded about prevention of injuries.
Students will be verbally quizzed on muscle groups and different stretches.
